John was born and raised in Prince George and has lived all of his life in Northern BC. He grew up enjoying fishing and hunting and first learned to drive on logging roads with his father. John was educated in the north and worked summers in the forest industry.

John entered forestry consulting in the mid-1980s working for Industrial Forestry Service. In the late 1980s he worked with Timberline Forest Inventory Consultants in the field of Geographic Information Systems and went on to manage the GIS department. In the mid-1990s, John started his own company, Western Geographic Information Systems Inc., with offices in Houston and Prince George and ran the company until he entered public life.

John met Kim in 1993 and they were married in 1995. They enjoy the outdoors, kayaking, golfing, soccer, photography and traveling. John and Kim were unable to have children but borrow their six nieces and nephews from time to time from John’s family who live in Prince George. In 2009 they moved to Cluculz Lake and enjoy the peace and beauty of rural life.

Elected life was never an ambition of John’s. However, in the early 2000s, John decided to get involved and discovered he had a passion for politics. Public speaking was a fear that John overcame. The first speech he gave was in 1978 and he didn’t give another one until 2001. In 2002 John was first elected to the Board of Education for School District 57. He was elected to the Provincial Legislature in 2005 and re-elected in 2009.
